To say that this season is one to forget for Chelsea is a massive understatement. The Blues have underperformed beyond imagination after spending unbelievable amount of money in their last two transfer windows. There was an unprecedented rebuild at Stamford Bridge this season, with a plethora of players coming in. Chelsea are well stocked in most of the positions and are filled with quality players across the squad yet they are not able to click together as a unit. The Blues are closer to the relegation zone than the Champions League places, illustrating how far they have fallen.

Chelsea, with 39 points from 33 games, are only nine points behind 18th placed Nottingham Forest and could have been in serious danger of relegation had they got few lesser points at this stage. In contrast the 12th-placed Blues are 24 points behind fourth-placed Manchester United in the Premier League table. The managerial changes have not helped the club either to gain stability. Things have currently hit rock bottom under their caretaker manager Frank Lampard. With the hunt for a new full-time manager still underway, let us look at what Chelsea must do to bring back the glory days to Stamford Bridge.

Trim the oversized Chelsea squad

A host of players joined Chelsea in last summer window and this year’s January window. It is unusual for a club to sign that many players in just two windows but Chelsea did under their new owners. The result was – as expected – a complete disaster. The players struggled to gel in and work as a unit. There were too many players in multiple positions, making it difficult to pick and choose players for matchday. Some players did leave the club but that number was not enough. It is highly essential for the incoming manager to get rid of the puzzles that do not fit in his system. Hence, a massive departure could be on cards at Stamford Bridge this summer.

Sign a new striker

This goes without saying is the main priority for Chelsea in the summer transfer window. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Joao Felix arrived over the last two windows to play up front. However, neither player have been able to establish their place in the squad. Striker shortage has been a big problem for the Blues over the last few seasons. Despite signing multiple players in both windows, the London outfit have not been able to find the right player to fill that vacancy up front. For Chelsea, to start competing with the big boys, they need a proven goal scorer in their ranks.

Get a proper system in place

It is going to be a massive summer for whichever manager that will join the Blues on a permanent basis. Apart from trimming their oversized squad and making the right signings, it is important for the new manager to leave his own footprint on the club. He must come in with a proven system and buy players that will suit his philosophy. The ones that do not fit his system must be sold or sent away on loan. With Chelsea signing quite a few players on lengthy contracts, it will be a challenge to offload them instantly. Either way, the manager must bring his own approach and must create an identity which will lead the way for the Blues on the pitch.
