Two League One sides will be up against each other in the opening match of Group P of the EFL Trophy on Tuesday evening as Bristol Rovers play host to Cheltenham Town at Memorial Stadium on Tuesday evening. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of not-so-great results in their third tier outings at the weekend, with the hosts playing out a 1-1 draw against Lincoln City, while Cheltenham were beaten 2-0 by Barnsley. Meanwhile, the Pirates reached the quarter-final in this competition last season before losing out to Plymouth Argyle. The visitors, on the other hand, fell in the first round of the 2022-23 Carabao Cup.

Bristol Rovers came from behind to earn a dramatic last-ditch draw against Lincoln City on Saturday thanks to Josh Grant’s 94th-minute equaliser after going behind through Adam Jackson’s 53rd-minute opener. The result extended their winless run to three League One games, leaving them in the 17th spot after six matches. Over their first seven outings across all competitions this season, Joey Barton’s side have managed just one win, which came against Charlton Athletic mid-way through August thanks to Scott Sinclair’s 58th-minute opener and Luke McCormick’s winner four minutes into the injury time. Meanwhile, the Pirates recorded three draws and as many defeats from their other six matches, that includes a Carabao Cup first-round loss to Ipswich Town.
Cheltenham, on the other hand, have made a nightmarish start to their 2023-24 campaign, losing five of their opening six league-fixtures and are languishing at the foot of the League One standings, with just a solitary point to their name. The Robins lost out to Barnsley last time out courtesy of two unanswered goals from Devante Cole and Max Watters in the second-half. Wade Elliott’s side were also beaten in the opening round of the Carabao Cup by Birmingham City last month. Nothing has been going right for Cheltenham this term so far, not scoring a single goal from seven games in all competitions, while conceding ten in the period. The Robins desperately needs to find a way to get on the score sheet if they are to get back on track.
