What makes Amrabat’s transfer standout from the remaining ones is the position in which he is being signed.

Manchester United ended the transfer window in explosive fashion after completing many deals on the deadline day. One of the signings that stood out was Sofyan Amrabat’s loan move from Italian side Fiorentina on Friday, subject to international clearance and registration requirements. What makes Amrabat’s transfer standout from the remaining ones is the position in which he is being signed.

Midfield had been a weak link at Manchester United for a long time. Ever since Erik ten Hag’s arrival as the manager last summer, the Dutchman has prioritised that position over the others, something he did in this summer as well. Earlier in the window Mason Mount joined from Chelsea and at the end, Amrabat completed his loan move from Fiorentina. Both midfielders offer something different to the team. However, Amrabat’s acquisition fills an immediate void in the team, as they do not have many players in that position.

Why did Manchester United sign Sofyan Amrabat?

“It was already, from the start of the season, one of my wishes to get another [number] six, a holding midfielder, in the squad because through the season you need that depth there. In that position we only had Casemiro who can play really well there. With others we have to make compromises but, with Sofyan Amrabat, we have another one,” ten Hag was quoted as saying by the club’s website during his post-match press conference after the 3-1 Premier League defeat to Arsenal.

He added: “Also he can play alongside Casemiro because he can also play a little bit higher on the pitch. So it’s very good to have him and I think he fits very good to Premier League football, to Champions League football. I think the demands are strong. He is very dynamic, he’s very good in the duels. So we are pleased that we have him at United and I think he will contribute to our high targets we set.” Asked whether he was frustrated that the transfer didn’t happen sooner, the manager replied, “No, sometimes you have to wait for the right timing.”

‘I am representing the club of my dreams’

After completing his loan move to Man United, the Morocco international had expressed his happiness at joining the club. “It is a huge honour to become a Manchester United player. I’ve had to be patient for this moment but I’m someone who always listens to my heart and now I am representing the club of my dreams,” Amrabat was quoted as saying by the club’s website.

The 27-year-old midfielder added: “I am a passionate player; I want to bring that energy to the squad, and I will put everything into every action I take for the team. I know exactly how Erik ten Hag likes to work and what he needs from his players. His coaching and guidance developed me so much as a player earlier in my career. I know that he will help to bring out the best of my abilities so that I can help the group to be successful this season.”
