Benfica had reached the quarter-finals of the tournament last term, losing out to to their upcoming opponents, who had finished runners-up. However, this time around, the Portuguese outfit are hoping to salvage at least a Europa League spot, having lost each of their four group games so far. Nevertheless, the Eagles have been impressive in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, taking 28 points from 11 games to be sitting at the summit of the standings. Roger Schmidt’s side are heading into the match on the back of a 2-0 Taca de Portugal win over Famalicao at the weekend thanks to Riccieli Junior and Rafa Silva. The result extended their unbeaten run to 13 games in the domestic competitions, recording 12 wins in the process.
Inter, on the other hand, have won three and drawn one of their four Group D games so far. Simone Inzaghi’s side edged past Salzburg in their last Champions League outing earlier this month thanks to Lautaro Martinez’s lone goal from the penalty spot five minutes from time. Nerazzuri then secured 2-0 Serie A win over Frosinone before going into the international break. However, on their return to action against Juventus in Turin at the weekend, Inter earned a point thanks to Martinez’s 33rd-minute equaliser. Having taken 32 points from 13 Italian top flight games, Inzaghi’s side are sitting at the summit of the table, two points clear of the chasing pack.
