On November 21, 2023, Indian badminton stars Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have been nominated for the Player of the Year award in the BWF Pair of the Year category by the Badminton World Federation (BWF). The men’s doubles pair of Satwik and Chirag have clinched multiple tournaments in 2023 and 2022, including a historic gold medal at the Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou, China. The men’s doubles duo became the first-ever Indian to win a gold medal at the prestigious event.
The year 2023 saw Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, winning the Badminton Asia Championship 2023 in the men’s doubles, becoming the first-ever Indians to claim the event, ending a 58-year-old wait. They also became the first Indian to win the BWF World Tour Super 1000 Indonesia Open 2023 title. They had also clinched the Super 500 Korea Open and Super 300 Swiss Open. Besides this, Satwik and Chirag’s long list of achievements includes the Commonwealth Games 2022 gold medal, and the 2022 World Championships bronze, and contributed to the nation’s 2022 Thomas Cup title triumph.
Although Satwik and Chirag had some remarkable achievements this year, they also had some early exits in tournaments like the China Open and the Japan Masters which could result in them not bagging the prestigious title. In fact, despite being named the World No. 1 for a certain period this year, they are in doubt for the BWF World Tour Finals. Apart from Satchi, Chen Qing Chen/ Jia Yi Fan, Zheng Si Wei/ Huang Ya Qiong, and Seo Seung Jae/ Chae Yu Jung have been nominated under the same category.
Besides the ‘Brothers of Destruction’, another Indian Thulasimathi Murugesan has been nominated in the Para-Badminton category. After grabbing gold in singles in the Asian Para Games, she continued it with a women’s doubles gold in the Japan Para-Badminton International 2023. The event also saw her winning a silver in the women’s singles and a bronze in the mixed doubles category.
