Chirag Shetty is one of the prominent names in Indian Badminton. He is the partner of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, who represents India in the men’s doubles event. Chirag started playing badminton at the age of seven and his family was very supportive about it. He was eventually partnered with Satwiksairaj Rankireddy when he joined the Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad and the duo have become the strongest links in Indian badminton over the past few years.
After being paired together, Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy went on to win the Mauritius International, India International Series, Tata Open India International, and Bangladesh International in 2016. They played an instrumental role in India’s Commonwealth Games 2018 mixed team gold medal win against Malaysia. The pair also clinched the silver medal in the men’s doubles event at the games. Chirag and his partner Satwik continued to rise and went on to win the Thailand Open 2019 by defeating the World no. 2 Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen of China and finished as a runner-up at the French Open 2019.
At the Tokyo Olympics 2020, Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy represented team India in the competition. Despite winning two of their three matches, the duo, unfortunately, couldn’t reach the knockout stage. Three of the four teams in the group had won two matches each and the qualification was done on the basis of the number of sets won that resulted in Sat-Chi bowing out. In the two matches which they won, they had also defeated the eventual gold medalists Lee Yang and Wang Chi-lin in a nail-biting contest.
But, medals started coming. Some of their top achievements include titles at India Open 2022, Thomas Cup 2022 (Team event), French Open 2022, Swiss Open 2023, bronze medal win at the BWF World Championships, and gold at the Badminton Asia Championships 2023. Chirag also earned the bronze medal at the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships (team event), however, Satwik wasn’t a part of the competition due to injury. However, this duo has achieved a lot of firsts in the men’s doubles event for India and will be one of the prime contenders at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
