Malaysian badminton sensation Lee Zii Jia earned a dominant victory over China’s Lu Guangzu in straight sets by 21-10, 21-12 to reach the quarters of the LI-NING China Masters 2023 in a match that lasted for 40 minutes. Zii Jia, who has been playing as an independent shuttler, secured his fourth victory in five matches over the World no. 16 shuttler Lu who represented the host nation.
With this triumph, Lee Zii Jia is all set to compete against the reigning world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand or Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto on Friday, November 24, 2023. Some of his recent performances include losses in the first round of the Kumamoto Masters Japan, the round of 16 against Li Shi Feng in the French Open, before finishing as the runner-up at the Denmark Open 2023. The World no. 11 had won the Arctic Open, a BWF World Tour Super 500 event this season.
A strong performance here at the China Masters 2023 could boost Zii Jia’s chances of earning a spot in the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) World Tour Finals 2023, scheduled in Hangzhou from December 13 to December 17, 2023, where the top eight men’s singles players will compete. This time, the total prize money is set at US$2.5mil. Competing on Friday, he aims to make it to the semi-finals which could be his sixth appearance in this stage on the BWF World Tour for the season.
