Prakash Padukone is a legendary name in the world of Indian badminton who etched his name in history by achieving the number one world ranking in 1980. That same year, he also became the first Indian to win the prestigious All England Open Badminton Championships. His journey in badminton began in Bangalore, Karnataka, under the guidance of his father, Ramesh Padukone who was the secretary in the Mysore Badminton Association.

Padukone made his debut in the domestics at the Karnataka state junior championship in 1962, where he exited in the first round but came back stronger two years later by winning the state junior title. He changed his gameplay in 1971 which was the reason behind him capturing the Indian national junior title in 1972, and winning the senior title that same year. He remained the most dominant player in nationals as he was unchallenged for seven straight years.

At the international stage, Padukone’s breakthrough came with a bronze medal at the Badminton Asia Championships in 1976, followed by a gold medal at the 1978 Commonwealth Games. He then clinched the “Evening of Champions” in London, and in 1980, he won the Danish Open. He then became the first Indian men’s singles player to win the title at the prestigious All England Open in 1980. Besides this, he has achieved two medals at the World Cups – bronze in 1980 and gold in 1981.

In 1981, Prakash Padukone prevailed over Han Jian in the India Open, and the following year, he clinched the Dutch Open. He also registered runner-up finishes in various international events like the Denmark Open in 1982, and Chinese Taipei Open, the Japan Open, the Dutch Open, the Scandinavian Open, the India Open, and the Thailand Open in 1983. He did international training in Denmark and was great friends with Morten Frost. After retiring from professional badminton in 1991, Padukone was the chairman of the Badminton Association of India for a brief period and coached the national team.
