Prakash Padukone is an eminent figure in Indian badminton who is renowned for winning a bronze medal at the World Championships and a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Born on June 10, 1955, in Bangalore, Karnataka, Padukone’s introduction to badminton was through his father, Ramesh Padukone who was a secretary at the Mysore Badminton Association. This early exposure laid the foundation for his future success.

Despite a first-round defeat in his first Karnataka State Junior Championship in 1962, Padukone came back strongly to win the state junior title just two years later. His evolution in the game was evident in 1971 when he adopted a more aggressive playing style. The change paid off with his victory in the Indian national junior title in 1972. He then went on to win the senior title the same year. He continued his winning streak as he earned the National title for seven consecutive years.

Padukone’s international career’s first significant win was a bronze medal at the 1976 Badminton Asia Championships. He then continued to excel with a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games 1978 in Canada. The following year, he triumphed at the “Evening of Champions” in London. The year 1980 was a significant year for Padukone as he clinched the Danish Open, overcoming Morten Frost. He then scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win the All-England Championship in 1980. This victory was followed by a win at the Swedish Open against Rudy Hartono.

Prakash Padukone earned medals at the 1980 and 1981 World Cups, in the form of bronze and gold medals respectively. At the India Open in 1981, where he triumphed over China’s Han Jian. He continued his winning streak by securing the Dutch Open in 1982. Later, he finished runners-up in the Denmark Open in 1982, and Chinese Taipei Open, the Japan Open, the Dutch Open, the Scandinavian Open, the India Open, and the Thailand Open in 1983.

Throughout his career, Padukone trained extensively in Denmark and made strong bonds with European players like Morten Frost. Post-retirement in 1991, he transitioned into administrative roles as he served as the chairman of the Badminton Association of India and coached the national team. He also co-founded Olympic Gold Quest with Geet Sethi, aiming to elevate Olympic sports in India. He is presently the mentor of two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu.
