On the edition of WWE Smackdown airing the next week, the Smackdown World Cup competition will start. Along with numerous other matchups, WWE announced an eight-man tournament that will start the following week.
Rey Mysterio and GUNTHER battled for the intercontinental title in the night’s main event of WWE SmackDown on the eve of the big match between undisputed WWE global champion Roman Reigns and social media juggernaut Logan Paul at Crown Jewel.
A No Disqualification Match on Friday night put an end to the weeks-long feud between Liv Morgan and Sonya Deville, which had seen the former SmackDown Women’s champion descend into terrible behavior. A brutal encounter centered on Morgan’s escalating anger saw the participants trade off control of the match before Deville appeared to have won it after a powerful powerbomb into steel chairs. The tough Morgan battled through the suffering, fought from below, and achieved victory with ObLIVion.
LA Before the bell rang, Knight personalized his bout with Ricochet by attacking Samantha Irvin, the ring announcer, who is the girlfriend of his opponent. Ricochet took offense and engaged the former Maximum Male Model in combat. Prior to the break, Knight changed the momentum and worked over Ricochet before unleashing his arsenal on The One and Only. The babyface took in everything that was hurled at him and, as he climbed the ropes, seemed to be headed for triumph.
The much-hyped match between No. 1 contender Rey Mysterio and Intercontinental champion GUNTHER headlined Friday’s show. The Ring General dominated the competition early, overwhelming the future Hall of Famer with his size and power advantages. The pesky Mysterio teased a comeback on several occasions but the champion cut him down and continued to work him over. Down the stretch, the all-timer did mount that comeback and came within seconds of dethroning the Austrian. Instead, GUNTHER managed to thwart his comeback attempt and deliver a lariat clothesline for the win.
