WWE is supposedly talking about having Roman Reigns wrestle twice at WrestleMania 39

Reigns is anticipated to hold the title of Undisputed Universal Champion until WrestleMania 39 in April 2019, despite the fact that he is presently out due to a burst eardrum.

Roman Reigns may be pulling double duty at WWE WrestleMania 39. According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t WrestlingNews.co), “One of the things talked about internally in WWE is for Reigns to wrestle both nights at Mania, with the working ideas being Cody Rhodes and Dwayne Johnson. Nothing is definite…There is also talk of splitting up the titles so Raw has a world champion after Mania.”

Despite being out with a burst eardrum, Reigns is likely to retain the Undisputed Universal Championship until WrestleMania 39 next April. Along the road, he’ll almost certainly feud with Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn, who will serve as his two primary interim opponents on his journey to a blockbuster showdown on “The Grandest Stage of Them All.”

The Rock vs Roman Reigns

WWE’s ideal situation, of course, is The Rock vs. Reigns, the epitome of a fantasy match that has been talked about for years but has never materialized. Rock vs. Reigns’ final fate is determined by the former’s ability to fit a long WWE run into his notoriously hectic schedule. If he can pull it off, “The People’s Champion” vs. “The Head of the Table” may be the most important match WWE could conduct at WrestleMania 39.

The second most popular theory for Reigns’ potential WrestleMania 39 opponent is that he will face a returning Cody Rhodes, who is expected to return from a torn pectoral tendon right around Royal Rumble time and checks all of the boxes for what WWE would be looking for when choosing Reigns’ Mania opponent. He’s a top talent, a terrific in-ring performer, and a new opponent for Reigns, and maybe most significantly, there’s an easy-yet-compelling story to tell here about Rhodes finally becoming world champion and doing so by ending Reigns’ historic reign.

Whether or not The Rock returns, that could be a compelling tale for WWE to tell in the run-up to WrestleMania 39. After all, if the two feuds take place concurrently, WWE may end up watering down both Rock vs. Reigns and Reigns vs. Rhodes. Will WWE be able to focus on both of these prominent rivalries at the same time? Even with Triple H in charge, that seems unlikely.

While Rhodes vs. Reigns may appear predictable on paper, it may be the most intriguing non-Rock narrative WWE can tell, especially because Reigns has already faced most of the top performers he could face at WWE’s premier event.
