In a recent appearance on “Busted Open Radio,” WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair delved into the world of professional wrestling, reminiscing about a remarkable era and a classic feud that left an indelible mark on the sport.

Flair began by sharing his thoughts on the forthcoming biopic, “The Iron Claw,” which centers around the iconic Von Erich wrestling family. The film stars Zac Efron as Kevin Von Erich and is directed by Sean Durkin, acclaimed for “Martha Marcy May Marlene.” Flair expressed his nostalgia, stating, “I saw the trailer yesterday, but you really had to be there. It showed Michael Hayes. The Freebirds and I were right in the middle of that. The whole thing, tragic.”

The Scorching Feud: Ric Flair vs. Kerry Von Erich

Ric Flair’s association with the Von Erichs, particularly Kerry, is etched in wrestling history. He vividly recounted a scorching summer day in 1984 when he faced Kerry Von Erich at the Texas Stadium, where the temperature soared to a blistering 105 degrees. “You know what happened is nobody anticipated the heat. Instead of running it [at] 8 o’clock at night, they worried about the weather, they ran it at 1 o’clock in the afternoon and it was 105 degrees,” Flair said.

He went on to describe the grueling conditions, where people were being carried out on stretchers due to dehydration. The wrestling mat cover had absorbed the unforgiving sun’s heat to a point where it became unbearable to lie on. Flair’s vivid recollection of the sweltering conditions underscored the physical demands of professional wrestling during that era.

“The Iron Claw”: Nostalgia Revisited

Flair also weighed in on “The Iron Claw,” expressing his belief that the biopic might be emerging “20 years too late.” The wrestling landscape has evolved, and many fans may not be familiar with the Von Erich family’s legacy. Nonetheless, Flair acknowledges that what was once old is now new again, as the wrestling world continues to celebrate and pay tribute to its rich history.

In the midst of revisiting the past and celebrating the enduring legends of wrestling, “The Iron Claw” serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and passion that defined an era, leaving a profound impact on both the sport and its dedicated fanbase.
