Dalip Singh Rana (born 27 August 1972, Dhiraina, Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh, India) is an Indian professional wrestler, wrestling promoter, and actor who is best known for his time in the WWE under his in-ring name The Great Khali.

Khali made his professional wrestling debut in 2000. Before embarking on his professional wrestling career, he was an Assistant Sub-Inspector of the Punjab Police Department. He has appeared in four Hollywood films, two Bollywood films and several television shows. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as a member of the 2021 class.

Khali was born to Jwala Ram and his wife Tandi Devi in a Punjabi Hindu Rajput family of the Dhiraina village of Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district.

Being one of the seven siblings of a poor family, he had to do odd jobs to make ends meet. He also suffers from acromegaly, which among other effects causes gigantism and chin protrusion. When Khali was serving as a security guard in Shimla, he caught the eye of a police officer from the neighbouring State of Punjab that, having previously helped several employees of Punjab Police to become international sportspersons, got him inducted into the Punjab Police in 1993. Once he landed in Punjab’s Jalandhar, he trained in the local gyms to become a wrestler and soon he got selected for specialised wrestling training in the United States.

Khali signed for the WWE in 2006 on a developmental contract and they sent him to the Georgia-based promotion, Deep South Wrestling (DSW). Wrestling under his real name, Singh worked with Tommy Dreamer, ‘Slaughter Boys’, and Palmer Canon. After much thought, WWE management finally settled on the name The Great Khali, inspired by the Hindu goddess Kali.

With Shawn Daivari serving as his manager, Khali debuted on the April 7 episode of SmackDown, interfering in a match between The Undertaker and Mark Henry. On May 21, 2006, he defeated The Undertaker comprehensively in his debut pay-per-view match at Judgment Day.

Over the next few years, he feuded with John Cena, Shawn Michaels, Edge, Kane, and Randy Orton and built up a menacing foreign-born heel persona for himself.

2007 was arguably the most successful year of his wrestling career. He won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in a 20 man battle royal match, after eliminating Batista and Kane, the other two major contenders for the belt, together. He lost the belt to Batista at Unforgiven in a triple threat match, which also involved Rey Mysterio.

Later, he took on the Punjabi Playboy persona. Along with his manager at the time, Ranjin Singh, he hosted the weekly ‘Khali Kiss Cam’, where they would call up some seemingly random woman from the crowd to kiss Khali.

In May 2011, the old menacing giant gimmick was back. He suffered a series of losses as his character was used to springboard the new, upcoming talent in WWE. He left the promotion when his contract expired on November 13, 2014.
