A great achievement in WWE history occurred on December 6, 2004. In that evening’s Monday Night Raw main event, Trish Stratus and Lita competed for the Women’s Championship. It was the first time the company’s flagship programme hosted a female host to end the broadcast. Despite the victory for the women’s division and their supporters, the match supposedly didn’t go down well behind the scenes. Jim Ross, a former WWE commentator who currently works for AEW, recently made a startling admission.

First females to main event Raw

The 71-year-old said on his Grilling JR podcast that several unnamed performers were really “pi**ed off” when they learned the women’s main-event. One of them actually shouted, “What the hell is going on here?” Evidently, the mood at the rear was simmering. Women had to struggle for their right to perform on television at that time. At least now, the situation has greatly changed, and women are prominently represented.

“They were the first females to main event Raw, which I thought was great. That’s a lot bigger deal even today than people give it credit for. Many pi*sed-off wrestlers with testicles. What the hell is going on here? They [Lita and Stratus] deserved the opportunity, and they delivered,” Ross said.

They weren’t on “top” of anybody’s list

The impact of Trish Stratus and Lita’s influence on women’s wrestling over two decades ago was recently brought up by Jim Ross. Ross emphasized that both Stratus and Lita were not previously seen to be promising candidates but received contracts by WWE during his tenure when talking about Rhea Ripley’s ascent to fame in the same programme. “They [Trish Stratus and Lita] weren’t on top of anybody’s list, they weren’t five-star prospects, and they had not become superstars in the indies. I met them [at] different times and places when I was EVP of [WWE] Talent Relations, and we brought them in, and the rest is history,” Ross revealed.

In spite of the simmering politics behind the scenes, Stratus & Lita destroyed the building. They gave it their best in a match that permanently altered women’s wrestling. The new WWE Women’s Champion Lita defeated Stratus in a battle that lasted just under ten minutes. The Extreme Diva just tasted gold as the arena roared.
