In the midst of the wrestling community’s sorrow over the untimely passing of WWE’s Bray Wyatt (Windham Rotunda), stories of his extraordinary kindness and humor have emerged. As his colleagues pay tribute, a unique connection between Wyatt and his former WWE coworker Big E (Ettore Ewen) has come to light. Before entering the WWE, both Wyatt and Big E were state champions in high school wrestling, setting the stage for an intriguing matchup that never happened.

Sharing a nostalgic insight, Big E revealed on Twitter, “Windham was a state champion wrestler in high school & grew up a couple counties over from me.” He recounted a moment from the 2002-2003 wrestling season when they were scheduled to face each other in a high school dual meet. At the time, Big E was wrestling in the 215-pound weight class, while Wyatt was a formidable heavyweight. The anticipated showdown never took place, as they both accepted forfeits due to the absence of opponents in their respective weight categories.

Despite their missed high school bout, Big E fondly recalled the camaraderie that developed between him and Wyatt in the wrestling world. Both wrestlers crossed paths during their developmental days in Florida Championship Wrestling and later on WWE’s main roster. Wyatt’s trademark warm laugh and playful jabs about the unfulfilled high school match became a recurring theme in their interactions. Big E reminisced, “Once we became coworkers, he’d regularly hit me with that trademark, warm laugh & tell me I dodged him. He wasn’t wrong.”

The relationship between Big E and Bray Wyatt goes long back

While their high school match never materialized, Wyatt and Big E shared countless training sessions and moments in the wrestling ring. Notably, the two joined forces in a six-man tag team match at Battleground 2016. The Wyatt Family, consisting of Wyatt, Braun Strowman, and Erick Rowan, faced off against The New Day, represented by Big E, Kofi Kingston, and Xavier Woods.

Bray Wyatt’s impact on the wrestling world extended beyond his in-ring performances. As colleagues and fans remember his kind-hearted nature and unmatched humor, the story of the almost-match between Wyatt and Big E serves as a testament to the connections forged in the world of wrestling. While their high school bout may have been missed, the memories and friendships built throughout their shared journey continue to resonate with those who admired them both.
