Lazio thrashed Cagliari 3-0 in the Serie A fixture at the Sardegna Arena on Saturday. Maurizio Sarri’s side took the lead through Ciro Immobile from the penalty spot before Luis Alberto finished off a stunning breakaway move to double the lead and then Felipe Anderson completed the drubbing  with a brilliant solo-goal. The win helped Lazio to 46 points from 28 games, just a point behind fifth place Atlanta, who lost 1-0 to AS Roma in the other match of the day. Meanwhile it was Cagliari’s first defeat in five games.

Lazio started the match on the driving seat as Immobile controlled a cross and fired inches wide before Alberto’s shot from outside the box stuck Giorgio Altare’s arm.  The defender tried to move his arm away from the ball but it stuck his elbow, and the referee pointed to the penalty spot after a VAR review.

The visiting captain Immboile stepped up and coolly deposited the ball into the bottom corner, sending Alessio Cragno the wrong way on 19 minutes. This was his 143rd Serie A goal in the Lazio jersey, equalling Silvio Piola’s club record.

Few minutes later, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s header from Alberto’s free-kick went over the bar. Lazio continued to push forward and deservedly got their second of the night on 42 minutes. It was a classic counter-attack from a Cagliari corner.

Alberto started the move near his own penalty area, got past Razvan Marin and gave the ball to Immobile in the midfield, the Italian spreaded it to Anderson on the right, whose first touch allowed him to get past the defender before delivering a low cross for Alberto to tap-in from six yards.

Lazio continued their domination after the break as yet another breakaway move nearly ended up in the back of the net but Alessio Cragno got down quickly for a sensational one-handed save on Immobile’s angled drive.

Marin forced a decent save from Thomas Strakosha before Anderson made it 3-0 at the other end. Savic played the ball to Anderson outside the box and the Brazilian easily went past two defenders before keeping his composure to slot home past Cragno into the net.

Adam Maurisic received a second yellow card late in the game for a hand ball, which he could have avoided and the visitors ended the match with 10 men.

Roma 1-0 Atalanta

Elsewhere Tammy Abraham’s first half goal helped Roma take all three points against Atalanta at Stadio Olimpico. It was a fiery encounter as both sides desperately needed all three points to close the gap on fourth-placed Juventus.

Inside the opening three minutes Atalanta keeper Juan Musso made a brilliant save to keep out Gianluca Mancini’s powerful header from a corner kick. The hosts broke the deadlock on 32 minutes when right-back Rick Karsdrop played a perfect long ball to pick Nicolo Zaniolo outside the box, the Italian controlled the ball brilliantly before laying it off for Abraham who skipped between centre-backs before firing in despite Musso getting a hand to it.

After the break, Remo Freuler played a nice little give-and-go with Teun Koopmeiners inside the box before being denied by Rui Patricio at the near post. Demiral’s header from Hans Hateboer’s cross went straight to Patricio as Atlanta failed to score for a fourth time in their last seven Serie A games.

Things worsened in the stoppage time as Marten de Roon received his second yellow card for dissent before Henrikh Mkhitaryan followed him for an intentional handball. The win helped Jose Mourinho’s side to 47 points from 28 games, level on points with fifth-placed Atalanta, who have a game in hand, and three behind the top-four.
