AC Milan will be hosting Atalanta on Sunday at the San Siro aiming to move one step closer to the Serie A title. Stefano Pioli’s side are just two wins away from guaranteeing a first Scudetto since 2011. A run of four successive victories has helped Milan to move two points clear at the top of the standings while their visitors are placed eighth in the standings, just a point behind the top six. A first league title in 11 years is almost within touching distance for Milan, entering the final few meters of an absorbing  Scudetto race. Milan head into the contest on the back of a brilliant come from behind 3-1 win against Hellas Verona last week while Atalanta beat Spezia 3-1.

At Stadio Bentegodi, it was Verona who took the surprise lead through Davide Faraoni’s header before Sandro Tonali equalised from Rafael Leao’s assist on the stroke of half time. Four minutes into the second half, the Milan midfielder completed his brace from yet another assist from Leao. And then, Alessandro Florenzi sealed three points for Milan with a powerful strike late in the match. The Rossoneri have responded with great character to seeing a 13-game unbeaten run ended by Inter Milan in the Coppa Italia semi-final last month, beating Lazio, Fiorentina and Verona in successive Serie A games

Even a draw this weekend would see Milan finish a season with more than 80 points for the first time since 2010-11. Milan’s defence has been in superb form having kept seven clean sheets from their last 10 league games. Throughout this calendar year, only Liverpool have conceded fewer goals than the Rossoneri’s nine in the top five European leagues.

Atalanta beat Spezia courtesy of goals from Muriel Fruto, Berat Djimsiti and Maro Pasalic. The victory at Alberto Picco helped La dea to move to 59 points, just one behind sixth-placed Roma. After the Spezia win, only leaders Milan and third-placed Napoli have picked up more points than Gian Piero Gasperini’s side from away matches this season.

Probable lineups

Pioli has almost a fully available squad and his main concern ahead of Sunday’s crucial encounter could be related to selection as Rade Krunic and Franck Kessie battle it out with Brahim Diaz for a place in support of centre-forward Olivier Giroud. The Frenchman is on nine goals this season and is aiming to become the oldest player to reach double figures in his debut Serie A season.

As for Atalanta, they have welcomed Duvan Zapata and Giorgio Acalvi back to training this week, following their respective muscle issues. But captain Rafael Toloi is set to miss Sunday’s game.

AC Milan possible starting lineup: Maignan, Calabria, Kalulu, Tomori, hernandez, Tonali, Bennacer, Saelemaekers, Kessie, Leao, Giroud

Atalanta possible starting lineup: Musso, Djimsiti, Demiral, Palomino, Hateboer, De Roon, Freuler, Zappacosta, Koopmeiners, Pasalic, Muriel
