AC Milan and Inter Milan, currently first and second respectively in the Serie A table, suffered setbacks in their bids to solidify their positions atop the league table.

A controversial equaliser saw Milan draw 1-1 against Udinese whereas Inter played out a 0-0 draw with Genoa.

The result leaves Milan atop the table, but only a point ahead of Inter. If Simone Inzaghi’s men had beaten Genoa, they would have been atop the table instead.

However, now the door is open for Napoli – who play Lazio on Sunday – to claim first position should they win this weekend.

What’s more, Luciano Spalletti’s men will be playing Milan next weekend in a match that could well help decide the course of the league.

If that is the case, Milan will regret the way they played against Udinese. It was largely a listless showing from Stefano Pioli’s wards, who also drew 2-2 against Salernitana.

However, they did have reasons to be mad at the referees. This is because both them and VAR missed a clear handball in the build-up to Udinese’s equaliser.

Destiny Udogie scored the goal, but the Italy U-21 player did not celebrate much. This is due to the fact that he himself was unsure if he handled it or not.

“That equaliser should have been disallowed, Udogie clearly touches the ball with his arm,” Pioli said to DAZN.

“We didn’t play particularly well but VAR should have seen it, it’s a clear error. It’s not the first time that we’ve been penalised (by a refereeing decision).

“Maybe Udinese would have equalised later, but this isn’t OK.”

Inter fail to capitalise on Milan’s Serie A slip-up

In one sense, Milan were lucky that local rivals Inter did not reclaim the Serie A top spot. Simone Inzaghi’s side are also in the midst of a small slump.

They have a game in hand over Napoli and Milan but have not won once in their last 4 games. This includes a 2-0 loss to Liverpool in the Champions League that has all but eliminated them from Europe.

And against Genoa, it wasn’t down to a lack of trying. Inter created plenty of chances but – in what has become a worrying trend lately – could not find their finishing touch.

“Regardless of what Milan did, today was two points lost,” Inter’s Danilo D’Ambrosio told DAZN. “When you have a lot of chances you have to put the ball in the goal.

“But it’s a team game, it’s not just a problem with the forwards because defenders and wingers had chances to score too. We need to be more clinical regardless of what position we play.”
