Before kick-off both teams posed with shirts and large signs reading “Everyone for Ukraine” in Spanish to protest Russia’s invasion of its neighbour. Surprisingly Sociedad struck first when Dani Carvajal brought down David Silva inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot.

Oyarzabal stepped up and converted the spot-kick to put the visitors ahead. That proved to be their only shot on goal in the entire match. From then on, the home side dominated the proceedings and Sociedad could barely touch the ball and was pushed into its own box.

Although the visitors resisted for a while Carlo Ancelotti’s side equalised on 40 minutes courtesy of a stunning strike by Camavinga. The Frenchman unleashed a powerful left-foot strike from 25 yards out that went past Sociedad keeper Alex Remiro and into the net.

Three minutes later,Modric put Real Madrid’s nose in front with an even better strike. The veteran Croatian’s powerful left-foot strike from outside the box curled past Remiro into the net.

After the break, Benzema would force a finger-tip save from Remiro before Aritz Elustondo would bring down Vinicius junior just inside the area and the referee awarded a penalty after VAR intervention.

Benzema stepped up and calmly converted the spot-kick on 76 minutes. It was the Frenchman’s 19th league goal of the season. Three minutes later, Casemiro played a brilliant diagonal pass to release Carvajal on the right, the Spaniard cut the ball back from the byline for Asensio to slot home and make the score 4-1.
