Robin Gosens finally made his Inter Milan debut when he came off the bench to replace Ivan Perisic in the 88th minute of the Coppa Italia semi-final first leg clash against AC Milan on Tuesday. The match at San Siro ended in a goalless draw with Milan creating the better chances. Gosens joined Inter from Atalanta in the January transfer window but was sidelined with a thigh injury which he had sustained in September. The 27-year-old is one of the best left-backs in the Serie A and would be hoping to get back to his best.

“It is very satisfying to be back on the pitch after this nasty injury, as I was out for almost five months,” Gosens told Inter TV.

A 0-0 draw is not a good result for Inter as the away goal rule does apply with the Rossoneri technically the ‘home’ team here. That means if the second leg ends in a goal draw, then Milan will go through to the final. The second leg has not been formally announced yet.

Milan were clearly the better side on the night and Inter struggled to cope with their high pressing game. Early in the match, Brozovic was forced to concede possession inside his own box, but Handanovic was quick to recover and deny Alexis Saelemaekers who latched on to the loose ball.

“It is a tough test, but we can have our say in the second leg. Milan pressed high and we should’ve made more of the spaces, but this is a squad that has played a lot and fatigue is inevitable.”

Gosens had not played since Atalanta’s 1-0 Champions League victory against Young Boys on September 29 as he had torn a muscle in his thigh and also suffered a relapse just as he was about to make a comeback.

The Germany international has been one of the best full-backs in Serie A over the last few seasons. Gosens, Achraf Hakimi and Theo Hernandez are the only defenders to have contributed to at least nine goals in the opening 21 Serie A games in the last 15 years.

He has signed a four-and-a-half year contract with inter and moved on loan with an obligation to buy in the future.
