Inter Milan have completed the signing of Germany international Robin Gosens from Atalanta on a deal reportedly worth EUR 25 million until 2026, the Serie A champions announced on Thursday. The 27-year-old has signed a four-and-a-half year contract in Milan and moves on loan with an obligation to buy. Gosens signed for Atalanta in 2017 from Dutch outfit Heracles for just EUR 1 million and made over 150 appearances for the Bergamo club in all competitions, scoring 29 goals and registering 20 assists.

The Germany international has been one of the best full-backs in Serie A over the last few seasons. Gosens, Achraf Hakimi and Theo Hernandez are the only defenders to have contributed to at least nine goals in the opening 21 Serie A games in the last 15 years.

Gosens becomes the Serie A leaders’ first signing of the January transfer window and will compete with Ivan Perisic for the left-wing-back position in Simone Inzaghi’s side.

“I’m so proud to have joined one of the biggest clubs in Europe,” Gosens said. “I’m thrilled to be here and can’t wait to get started.

“It wasn’t a difficult decision for me. I didn’t need any convincing because I also know it’s a huge club.

“Some incredible German players have made history at this club. I hope to be part of that myself. That’s my ambition.”

Gosens played a pivotal role in Atalanta’s impressive showing in the Italian league in the last few seasons. They have managed to achieve three consecutive third-place finishes in Serie A. Meanwhile Gosens started every match for Germany at Euro 2020 last year.

He is now currently out of action with a thigh injury and played his last Serie A match on September 25 and has only made eight appearances across all competitions this season. He is not expected to return to action for at least another month.

Inter Milan are four points clear at the summit of Serie A, with a game in hand over Napoli and AC Milan below them. They face their local rivals in the Milan derby on February 5 in crucial match for the title race.
