Yuzvendra Chahal has been appointed Rajasthan Royals Skipper in IPL 2022 while Kumar Sangakkara has hailed the spin bowling department of the side.

The Rajasthan Royals have made some big announcements heading into IPL 2022. Everybody thought that Sanju Samson would be the captain of the Rajasthan Royals side, having been the skipper for the last couple of years. But, in an announcement on their social media platforms, Yuzvendra Chahal has been appointed as the skipper. Chahal is one of the few bowlers to be appointed as the skipper of an IPL team. Punjab Kings are yet to appoint a captain while Hardik Pandya, the captain of Gujarat Titans is an all-rounder. The rest of the team have appointed batsmen as their captains.
Chahal has been associated with Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the past in IPL. But, it was during his tenure with Royal Challengers Bangalore that he became one of the best bowlers in the business. It was a surprise that Yuzvendra Chahal was not retained by the Royal Challengers Bangalore ahead of the IPL 2022 Mega Auction.
Apart from Yuzvendra Chahal, Rajasthan Royals have picked up R Ashwin. With Ashwin and Chahal on the side, the spin bowling department has become potent. The presence of the duo has excited Kumar Sangakkara, the Rajasthan Royals’ Director of Cricket and Head Coach.

“We know we had quite a bit of work to do in the off-season with regards to our team. I think we managed to identify the key areas which needed our attention. We had a proper process when it comes to selecting players at the auction. We managed to kind of hit the markers that we set for ourselves. I think the franchise has done an amazing job to put this exciting and strong squad together,” Sangakkara said.
Sangakkara has also expressed his pleasure in having a squad that has covered all bases. The Sri Lankan legend has also gotten the services of Paddy Upton and Lasith Malinga in the backroom staff. “We have Boult, Prasidh, Saini, Coulter-Nile, McCoy, which makes up for a very exciting pace unit supported by of course the retentions of Yashasvi, Samson, and Buttler. We have secured depth in every department, with Neesham, Mitchell, and van der Dussen being exciting cricketers. We’ve got some really exciting and young cricketers from India as well,” Sangakkara said.

On the appointment of Malinga and Upton, Sangakkara said, “It’s pretty obvious for everyone to see the standards of both Lasith and Paddy. They’ve had stellar careers with their respective teams. They can prove to be vital elements in our quest for the title. Lasith comes with a pedigree, being one of the greatest T20 bowlers, and has mentored a lot of the Indian young bowlers as well.”
