Kumar Sangakkara is the only player in the history of the IPL to have effected five dismissals in a match and that took place in the 2011 edition of the tournament.
In the Twenty20 format, getting a big number of dismissals by an outfielder or a keeper is pretty rare. Suresh Raina is the only outfielder in the history of the IPL to take 100 catches or more in 14 years. For keepers, having a total of five dismissals is a worthy badge that is common in ODIs and Tests. In Twenty20 matches, that is rare. However, in the entire history of the tournament, there has been only one individual who has effected five dismissals in an innings in the IPL.
Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka holds the record for the most dismissals in an innings in an IPL match. During the 2011 encounter between Deccan Chargers and Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sangakkara effected five dismissals. He took five catches in Deccan Chargers’ 33-run win against the eventual finalists. Sangakkara took the catches of Tillakaratne Dilshan, AB de Villiers, Saurabh Tiwary, Johan van der Wath and Ryan Ninan to create history. To date, no keeper has ever taken five catches in an innings in the IPL.

Sangakkara has taken 402 catches and 99 stumpings in ODIs to take him past 500 dismissals. In the Test match arena, he has taken 182 catches and 20 stumpings in addition to his 12,4000 runs. But, in the IPL, this is a truly remarkable statistic.

Although he has effected only 43 dismissals in 71 matches during his time with Kings XI Punjab and Deccan Chargers, Sangakkara’s feat of five catches in an innings is truly remarkable. Even MS Dhoni and Adam Gilchrist have never achieved this feat. In his entire career, Sangakkara has hit 1687 runs in the IPL at an average of 25.95. Although his IPL stats are moderate, this feat makes his record better.
The 2011 edition of the IPL was tough for Deccan Chargers. They finished in the seventh spot, winning six games out of 14 to end with 12 points. After winning only three out of their first seven games, they lost four consecutive matches to bow out of contention for the playoffs. But, they ended their campaign on a high with three consecutive wins. The only glowing point for them in IPL 2011 was Sangakkara’s record. In the coming editions, this record might not be matched.
