When he was growing up, he wanted to be a Chess Grandmaster. Coming from the backwaters of Jind, it seemed highly unlikely that Yuzvendra Chahal would get a footing in chess. That is exactly how it panned out. He did impress as a FIDE Master in some events but he could not continue because he could not get sponsors. Chess’ loss was Cricket’s gain as he became one of India’s best legspinners in the limited-overs format. Even in cricket, as a youngster, he had a pressure-cooker situation developing.
During the 2011 Champions League T20 tournament, he was playing for the Mumbai Indians. He contributed a little with the ball, but with the bat he scored the winning runs in a close encounter against Trinidad and Tobago. But, it was his exploits in that tournament that caught everyone’s eye. Yuzvendra Chahal’s wily legspin, combined with his accuracy made him one of the stars for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL. Under the captaincy of Virat Kohli, he prospered as the best spinner both in the national side and for RCB in the IPL.
He formed a magnificent combination with Kuldeep Yadav and the duo set about tormenting the opposition with their variations. In fact, Yuzvendra Chahal holds the record for being the only concussion substitute who has won the Man of the Match Award. The fact that the likes of Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin’s brilliance in Tests is the major factor why he has not been earmarked as a Test bowler.
In the last couple of years, Yuzvendra Chahal has been in and out of the team. His omission from the India squad for the ICC World T20 2021 raised a lot of questions. Even more surprising was the fact that he was not retained as one of the first choices in the Royal Challengers Bangalore team. But, better days are ahead for Yuzvendra Chahal as 2022 offers up a new avenue.
Yuzvendra Chahal made his ODI and T20I debut when India toured Zimbabwe in 2016. He impressed in both forms and became one of the certainties in the team after that.
His magnificent performances for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2015 and 2016 gave Yuzvendra Chahal the boost for the India cap. In his second international game against Zimbabwe, he won the Man of the Match award. But, his best moment came in 2017 against England in a Twenty20 International. Yuzvendra Chahal became the first Indian bowler to take a five-wicket haul as he ended with 6/25. That spell saw England collapse, losing eight wickets for eight runs.
The year 2017 was a great year for him, ending with 23 wickets in T20Is. At the same time, his partnership with Kuldeep Yadav was superb. During the 2018/19 tour of Australia, Yuzvendra Chahal picked up a six-wicket haul in Melbourne to give India their first bilateral ODI series win in Australia. He was the first-choice spinner in the 2019 ICC World Cup in England, finishing with 12 wickets from 10 games.
Yuzvendra Chahal has played for Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL. He has played 114 matches and taken 139 wickets at an economy rate of 7.59. The years 2015 and 2016 were the best years for him, taking 23 and 21 wickets respectively at an average of under 20. After that, he took 21 wickets in 15 matches of IPL 2020 in the UAE, where the slow, low surfaces helped his spin.
