Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) will enter Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 with yet another attempt to clinch a maiden title. But this time plenty of things are expected to differ in their approach, with former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis taking over the reins from Virat Kohli, in a new-look side recruited at the mega auction.

Du Plessis is no stranger to the captaincy role. He took over the national Test captaincy in December 2016 and assumed full-time captaincy in all formats of the game in August 2017 after his former teammate AB de Villiers relinquished the two limited overs captaincies. He holds a staggering 73.68% win record as a captain across formats for the Proteas which with his experience expected to come in handy for the Bengaluru franchise in the lucrative tournament.

Veteran wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik who is among the new recruits for RCB unders how Du Plessis operates. He highlighted that the South African has made the most of his potential over the years which are good signs for any team that he represents.

“For a start, we need to first understand Faf. For a player over a period of time, he is somebody who has maximized his potential. That’s always a good sign for the leader,” Karthik told royalchallengers.com.

“They will have a lot of empathy and they will understand people. They will also understand what cricketers are going through and that’s very important for a leader. I think he will have an abundance of that.” the veteran added.

Faf du Plessis understands the game well: Dinesh Karthik

Karthik, who captained KKR and is no stranger to the shortest format of the game, also shed light upon how it feels to be in the opposition when Faf is playing.

“He was a leader of South Africa and I have seen how he leads the team. He is tactically very astute. He knows his game very well. That would definitely help because in IPL at the end of the day, you need a very good tactical captain and I think he is second to none for sure,” Karthik said.

“At the end of the day, leadership is about handling people. Everybody will vouch for the fact that he is a terrific guy and I am sure that you can already see the energy and the effort that he is putting in to get to know players. That will definitely pay off in time,” he concluded.
