Indian field hockey player Varun Kumar will represent his nation in the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in 2022 as a defender on the national team. Born in Punjab, Varun Kumar took up hockey during his school years. He competed for his native state of Punjab at the Junior National Championships in 2012 and did very well; however, an injury sidelined him for two years. In 2014, he returned to the game and was signed by the Punjab Warriors of the Hockey India League. He was kept on after the first edition for the 2015 and 2016 seasons, respectively. After leading India in scoring at the four-nation Invitational in Spain, he was eventually called up to the Junior World Cup squad.
After making his senior team debut for India in 2017, Varun Kumar has appeared in 109 games. Among his other professional accomplishments is the gold medal he won at the 2017 Asia Cup. Additionally, he competed for India in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 and the Muscat Champions Trophy in 2018, where they won the gold and bronze medals, respectively. Varun is a senior player for the BPCL as well. Varun Kumar has been chosen to play for India in the 2022 Commonwealth Games, and he will be required to defend the team when it matters most during the match.
