Besides 30 winners,, ten non-winners made to the field of the Sentry Tournament of Champions 2023, owing to their FedEx Cup playoff points.
The first event on the 2023 calendar year is the Sentry Tournament of Champions. The competition will take place at Hawaii’s Kapalua Plantation Course from January 5 to January 8, 2023. The tournament was scheduled to feature 40 golfers, however the current World No. 1 golfer, Rory McIlroy, withdrew from the prestigious competition. The competition was initially intended for champions, however the qualification standards have been changed. In addition, ten non-winners made the field owing to their FedEx Cup playoff points. Thirty of the 40 players on the field were 2022 winners. Three of the four major event winners will compete in the championship, which will feature a $15 million prize pool.
The Sentry Tournament of Champions takes place during the first week of January and has been contested on the Plantation Course at the Kapalua Resort near Lahaina on the Hawaiian island of Maui since 1999. It is a par-73 course, unlike many other PGA Tour events. The Desert Inn Country Club in Las Vegas, Nevada, hosted the event from its start through 1966 and then the Stardust Country Club in 1967 and 1968. It was conducted over the next thirty years at the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California. It changed venues from May 1985 to January 1986 before relocating to Maui in 1999.
Between 1975 and 1990, the tournament was sponsored by Mutual of New York (MONY). After three years of sponsorship by Infiniti, Mercedes-Benz began a sixteen-year relationship with the event, and the Tournament of Champions name was discontinued. The competition changed its name to the SBS Championship in 2010 after entering a new ten-year agreement with the Korean media corporation Seoul Broadcasting System. In 2011, Hyundai took over the title sponsorship, keeping SBS as a sponsor. SBS returned as the title sponsor in 2017 after Hyundai took up the PGA Tour event at Riviera Country Club. With a five-year deal beginning in 2018 and then extended through 2030, Sentry Insurance signed in to serve as the event’s title sponsor.
