Villarreal are heading into the match on the back of a shock 3-1 defeat to rock bottom side Elche last Saturday. Gerard Moreno found the back of the net for the Yellow Submarine, but Pere Milla’s hat-trick helped Elche take all three points at home and handed Villarreal their second consecutive league-defeat. Despite the back-to-back defeats, Quique Setien’s side are firmly in the battle for the top-four, currently trailing fourth-placed Atletico Madrid by four points. Meanwhile, Villarreal have largely been solid at home, picking up 19 points from nine matches, which is the fourth-best record in the division.

Barcelona, on the other hand, boast the best away record in the top flight, having pocketed 27 points from 10 outings this season. Blaugrana’s last match against Sevila at home ended in a dominant 3-0 win, thanks to second-half efforts from Jordi Alba, Gavi and Raphinha. It was the Catalan club’s 17th league-win of the season. Barca’s last defeat came against Bayern Munich in the group-stage of Champions League, late in October. Xavi’s side then got eliminated from the competition and will take part in the Europa League, hosting Manchester United in the first leg of the Round of 32 tie on Thursday.
Villarreal, who have not finished in the top-four in La Liga since the 2015-16, having lost six of their last seven league matches against Barcelona, but they did famously win 2-0 at Camp Nou last season, thanks to goals from Alfonso Pedraza and Moi Gomez. Saturday’s fixture will be the 52nd encounter between these two teams and Barca have a clear advantage in the head-to-head, with 51 wins compared to just 10 for the Yellow Submarine.
