Valencia had a disastrous Spanish top flight season last term, finishing 16th in the standings, with 42 points to their name from 38 games, just two points clear of the relegation zone. But Los Che will now be looking forward, and they have been impressive in the pre-season so far, winning each of their four friendlies, against the likes of Nottingham, Trnava, St. Gallen and Alaves. Ruben Baraja’s side put two goals past Alaves without reply thanks to Cenk Ozkacar’s 41st-minute opener and a 64th-minute effort from Martin Tejon. Meanwhile, Valencia have managed to boost their squad by signing the likes of Ozkacar and Pepelu from Lyon and Levante respectively this summer.
Aston Villa, on the other hand, have been unbeaten in their pre-season so far, recording three draws and two draws from five friendlies. After securing back-to-back draws against Walsall and Newcastle United, Lions registered their first win against Fulham, before playing out a thrilling 3-3 draw against Brentford on July 29. Four days later, on their return to home turf, Unai Emery’s side put three goals past Serie A giants Lazio without reply thanks to goals from Ollie Watkins, John McGinn and Seb Revan. Meanwhile, the Claret and Blue have made three exciting signings this summer, bringing in Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen, while Pau Torres has arrived from Villarreal and Youri Tielemans joined on a free transfer following his release from Leicester City.
