Villarreal saw their three game winning run come to an end with a 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid at the start of this month. After that, the Yellow Submarine played out a 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao before defeating Almeria last time out. It was their sixth away-win of the season from 16 La Liga games on the road, boasting the fifth-best away-record in the top flight this term. But Villarreal’s home-record hasn’t been great, collecting only 19 points from a possible 48 at El Madrigal.
Rayo, on the other hand, have the third-worst home-record in La Liga this season, but they have been decent on the road, registering four wins, five draws and seven losses from 16 matches. Rojiblancos saw their ten game winless run come to an end with a comprehensive 2-0 league-win over top six chasing Real Betis earlier this month. Although the next two outings ended in goalless draws, Inigo Perez’s side got the better of Osasuna last time out. The Capital side came from behind to secure a dramatic victory over Los Rojillos last Saturday thanks to one effort each from Pep Chavarria and Isi Palazon in the final ten minutes. It was their seventh top flight victory of the season.
