Uganda will look for a response against Niger following their disappointing 2-0 defeat against Algeria in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations opening qualifier. In their last match, Uganda were well beaten by Algeria, while Niger did well to come from behind and earn a draw against Tanzania. In the Group F fixture that will be played at the St. Mary’s Stadium-Kitende on Wednesday, the hosts will be the favourites thanks to their superior ranking. Uganda have a FIFA ranking of 86, compared to Niger’s 116.

Both teams head into this clash looking to secure their first victory of the qualifier. However, they both face a really difficult challenge at hand due to their disappointing results in recent months. Uganda have won only one of seven games this year in the stipulated 90 minutes. That was against Moldova in a January friendly match. Their run of form has been inconsistent even last year, hence a victory is not guaranteed for them on Wednesday against Niger dispite their superior ranking.

On the other hand, Niger’s form over the past year has been extremely worrisome. Since June 2021 till now, they have won only two games and both were against Djibouti in the 2022 World Cup qualification matches. This year, they have played thrice and drew twice, while losing once. The point they secured against Tanzania in the opening qualifier will give them a lot of positivity following their recent run of mediocre results. That draw can provide them with the confidence to get something out of Wednesday’s encounter.

Possible Line-ups

There are not many concerns about players’ fitness and suspension, which could allow both sides to name a strong line-up for Wednesday’s match. Daniel Sosah has been in good form for the visitors, including scoring the equaliser against Tanzania in the last match. He would look to maintain the goalscoring touch on Wednesday too. On the other hand, Uganda have a couple of question marks over a few players’ selections. Most notably up top, Farouk Miya will be eager for redemption on Wednesday following his penalty miss against Algeria in the last game.

Uganda possible line-up: Lukwago, Muleme, Mugabi, Lwaliwa, Kizito, Youngman, Aucho, Karisa, Okwi, Okello, Miya

Niger possible line-up: Van Attenhoven, Alhassane, Karim, Diabate, Garba, Soumana, Oumarou, Wonkoye, Adebayor, Moutari, Sosah
