Algeria will look to put their recent disappointments behind them and build on the positive start they have managed in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers when they travel to Tanzania. The much-fancied visitors had a year to forget, with them disappointing on two big occasions – AFCON and 2022 World Cup qualification. However, they started the 2023 AFCON qualifiers on a good note, winning their opening match against Uganda. Tanzania, on the other hand, will be aiming to turn their draw from the previous game into a win when these two sides face each other on Wednesday.

FIFA rankings are clearly in favour of Algeria, who are placed at 44, while Tanzania are way behind at 130. Despite their decent rankings, Algeria have disappointed big time in the international arena since the turn of the year. First, they had to bow out of the Africa Cup of Nations in the group stage following a poor start to the tournament, which saw them lose two games and draw one. Then they missed out on a Qatar World Cup ticket by losing to Cameroon in a two-legged qualification tie.

However, Algeria started the 2023 AFCON qualifiers positively, beating Uganda 2-0, and will hope to take that form to the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Tanzania have also been enduring a mixed run of form lately. In the three matches this year, they won only once and it was against the Central African Republic. Their victory prior to that was against Benin in October last year. They were held to a draw by Niger in the opening match of the ongoing AFCON qualifiers.

Possible Line-ups

For Algeria, Ismaël Bennacer is expected to run the show in the middle of the park, while Ghezzal and Slimani are the ones to keep an eye on up front for them. Youcef Belaïli scored in the last game for them and he will be looking to keep the goalscoring touch going. Goalkeeper Rais M’Bolhi who was rested in the last match could very well return to the Starting XI on Wednesday. On the other hand, Haji Monga was withdrawn for Tanzania against Niger in the last match, hence his participation in the upcoming game is not clear. George Mpole got the opener in the last match for Tanzania and the forward will be keen to add to his tally on Wednesday.

Tanzania possible line-up: Manula, Husseini, Dickson, Mwamnyeto, Shomari, Miroshi, Yassin, Samatta, Msuva, Salum, Mpole

Algeria possible line-up: M’Bolhi, Benayada, Touba, Mandi, Bensebaini, Zerrouki, Bennacer, Zorgane, Belaili, Slimani, Ghezzal
