Sunderland will host Watford in an EFL Championship fixture at Stadium of Light on Saturday. The reverse fixture in September last year ended in a 2-2 draw. The Black Cats twice came from behind to earn a point at Vicarage Road. Ajibola Alese canceled out Keinan Davis’s opener before Watford restored their lead through Luk O’Nien’s own goal, but Jewison Bennette’s 87-minute effort meant that the points were shared. Meanwhile, the hosts are heading into the match on the back of a 2-1 win away to West Bromwich Albion, while Watford suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Hull City.

Sunderland came from behind to secure all three points against West Brom at the Hawthorns last time out. The Baggies took the lead through John Swift’s penalty kick on the the stroke of half-time, but a second-half brace from Dennis Cirkin helped the Rocker Men register their 17th league-win of the season. The result extended their unbeaten run to seven games in the Championship, while winning three matches in the period. Tony Mowbray’s side are currently occupying seventh spot in the English second tier standings, having collected 65 points from 44 games, just a solitary point behind sixth-placed Coventry City. With two games remaining Sunderland are now more than outside contenders to earn a playoff spot.

Watford, on the other hand, are mathematically out of contention for a top six finish, as they are sitting at the 13th position with 59 points to their name from 44 games, seven adrift of the the playoff spot, and will be hoping to end the season on a positive note by taking maximum points from their two remaining games against Sunderland and Stoke City. The Hornets suffered their 15th second tier defeat of the season against the Tigers last Saturday courtesy of Ozan Tufan’s lone goal in the first-half. Meanwhile, current boss Chris Wilder, Watford’s third of the season, will not be at the helm for the 2023-24 season after collecting just eight points from his nine games in charge.
