Stoke City will be hoping to complete a Championship-double over Sunderland when they make the trip to Stadium of Light on Saturday. The Potters prevailed 2-1 in the reverse fixture at Bet365 Stadium back in October last year thanks to efforts from Ryan Mmaee and Luke McNally either side of Jack Clarke’s equaliser. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a narrow 1-0 defeat to Hull City, while Stoke were beaten 2-1 by Birmingham City. The Black Cats are currently occupying tenth spot in the English second tier standings, having collected 40 points from 28 games, just three adrift of the playoffs, while the visitors are languishing at the 19th position, with 32 points to their name, eight clear of the relegation zone.

Sunderland started 2024 with a comprehensive 2-0 win over Preston North End thanks to first-half efforts from Alex Pritchcard and Nazariy Rusyn. However, the Black Cats were then thrashed 3-0 by Newcastle United in the FA Cup third round tie, before suffering back-to-back Championship defeats against the likes of Ipswich Town and Hull, with an aggregate scoreline of 3-1. Fabio Caravlho’s lone goal twenty minutes from time handed Michael Beale’s side their 12th league defeat of the season. Meanwhile, Sunderland have won eight of their 12 fixtures at Stadium of Light in 2023-24, while they have also lost six times infront of their own supporters.

Stoke City, on the other hand, have recorded eight wins, eight draws and 12 defeats from 28 league games so far. The Potters secured their last win away to Rotherham United on January 13 thanks to Lewis Baker’s lone goal on the stroke of half-time. However, a week later, Steven Schumacher’s side lost out 2-1 to Birmingham at Bet365 Stadium despite the fact that Jordan Thompson got on the scoresheet. Meanwhile, on a positive note, the Staffordshire-based outfit are unbeaten in their last four travels, recording two wins in the process.
