Stuttgart will host Hamburger SV in the first leg of their Bundesliga relegation playoff on Thursday night. The hosts finished their top flight league campaign at the 16th position, having collected 33 points from 34 games, while the the Red Shorts secured a third-place finish in the 2. Bundesliga standings, with 66 points to their name. Meanwhile, the Swabians are heading into the match on the back of a 1-1 draw against Hoffenheim in their final league-match of the season last weekend, while the visitors ended the regular second tier campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory away to Sandhausen.

Stuttgart came from behind to earn a point against Hoffenheim last time out courtesy of Tiago Tomas’s 80th-minute equaliser. Prior to that, Die Roten secured their seventh league-win of the season away to mid-table side Mainz (4-1) thanks to goals from Wataru Endo, Serhou Guirassy, Chris Fuhrich and Tanguy Coulibaly. With five points taken from their final three games, the Swabians finished just a solitary point adrift of safety and two clear of automatic drop zone. Meanwhile, Stuttgart’s home-record in the league hasn’t been very great having pocketed just 21 points from a possible 51 at Mercedez-Benz Arena. On a positive note, the Swabians secured a 3-2 win over Hamburger in the previous competitive meeting way back in 2020 in the second division.

Hamburger, on the other hand, narrowly missed out on an automatic qualification spot courtesy of finishing just a solitary point behind the top two. The Dinosaur are heading into the match on the back of three successive victories, scoring eight goals and conceding just two in the period. Last time out, Tim Walter’s men secured their 20th second tier victory of the season thanks to Jean-Luc dompe’s lone goal inside the opening three minutes. Die Rothosen finished the regular season with the best away-record, collecting 30 points from their 17 matches on the road. The Red Shorts are aiming to return to the top tier for the first time in five years and will be hoping to avoid last season’s relegation playoff defeat to Hertha Berlin, losing 3-0 on aggregate.
