Two sides desperate to end their two game losing run will be up against each other on Friday night as Sheffield Wednesday play host to Birmingham City in an EFL Championship fixture at Hillsborough. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a 4-1 defeat to Coventry City in a FA Cup fourth road tie in the mid-week, while the Blues suffered a narrow 2-0 league-defeat away to West Bromwich Albion at the weekend. The Owls are currently languishing at the 23rd position in the English second tier standings, having collected 23 points from 30 games, eight adrift of safety, while the visitors, who have a game in hand, are sitting at the19th spot, with 32 points to their name, just four clear of the relegation zone.

Sheffield Wednesday saw their FA Cup run come to an end on Wednesday night when they were trashed by compatriots Coventry in the reverse fixture of the Fourth round tie. Bailey Cadamarteri’s 10th-minute effort canceled out Kasey Palmer’s opener inside the opening three minutes, but the Sky Blues came out all guns blazing in the second half and netted thrice thanks to Callum O’Hare’s brace and one effort from Haji Wright. The result extended the Owls’ winless run to six games in all competitions, recording four defeats in the period. Meanwhile, on a positive note, Sheffield Wednesday have lost only two of their last eight games across all competitions at Hillsborough, while winning four of those.

Birmingham, on the other hand, have recorded eight second tier wins this tem and their last league-victory came away to Stoke City (2-1) on January 20 thanks to efforts from Jay Stansfield and Juninho Bacuna. However, a week later, the Blues were thrashed 3-0 by second tier leaders Leicester City in the FA Cup fourth round tie, before suffering their 13th Championship defeat away to West Brom on Saturday. Andreas Weiman’s 85th-minute effort separated the two sides at the Hawthorns and Birmingham are now realistically out of the race for the playoffs, as they are 13 points adrift of the top six, with 17 games remaining.
