Two of the giants of African football Senegal and Cameron will face off in a friendly fixture at Estadio Bollaert-Delelis in France on Monday evening. Both sides suffered 1-0 defeats in their recent outings, with the Lions of Teranga losing out to Algeria last month, while Indomitable Lions were beaten by Russia in the mid-week. Meanwhile, the two nations secured the top spot in their respective 2023 AFCON qualifying groups, ensuring their qualification for the continents biggest tournament scheduled to be held in Ivory Coast in January.

Senegal Senegal secured top spot in Group L of the AFCON qualification courtesy of recording four wins and two draws from their six games. After the 1-0 defeat to Senegal in the African Nations Championship back in January, the Lions of Teranga went on an impressive nine game unbeaten run across all competitions, recording seven wins in the period. Meanwhile, their stunning run came to end against Algeria in a friendly fixture on September 13 courtesy of Fares Chaibi’s lone goal at Stade Me Abdoulaye Wate. Monday’s fixture will be their final outing before the World Cup qualifiers take centre-stage. Having reached the last-16 stage of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Senegal will be bidding to earn a ticket to the 2026 World Cup, which will be their third successive appearance at the global event.
Cameroon, on the other hand, lost out to Russia in a friendly on Thursday courtesy of Fedor Chalov’s lone goal before the half-time whistle at Dinamo Lev Yashin Stadium. As a result the Indomitable Lions have now won only one of their last five matches across all competitions. Their lone victory in that period came against Burundi in the AFCON qualifier in September, thanks to three unanswered goals from Bryan Mbeumo, Christopher Wooh and Vincent Aboubakar. The result helped Rigobert Song’s side to take their tally to seven points from six Group C games and thereby secure top spot in the table. Meanwhile, Cameroon are set to kickoff their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign against Mauritius on November 13 and they will be hoping to sign off their international break on a high.
