The UEFA Euro Qualifier between Wales and Croatia will occur at the Cardiff City Stadium on Monday at 12:15 am IST.
Wales are set to play Croatia at the Cardiff City Stadium on Sunday in the qualification round of the UEFA Euro qualifiers. For the Welsh team, their hope of automatic qualification for Euro 2024 is hanging by a thread. Naturally, Wales aims for a top-two finish and thereby realistically relies on winning each of their last three matches. However, their Croatian counterparts remain favourites in this match with the likes of Luka Modric featuring in the clash.
With five games played, Rob Page’s side sits fourth in the table. Currently, they are level on points with Armenia and three behind second-placed Croatia. Wales has one game in hand which it will play before a packed stadium with home fans. After Croatia slipped up at home to Turkey on Thursday, the Dragons could still sneak into Group D’s top two. However, it will take victory this weekend followed by wins over both Armenia and Turkey next month to qualify automatically. The biggest miss for the Dragons will be Gareth Bale. The 34-year-old retired from the game as arguably the greatest Welsh football player of all time. Nevertheless, even Bale will hope for his side to pass the litmus test against Croatia with flying colours.
Croatia, on the other hand, lost 1-0 to Turkey in their most recent game. A first-half goal from Galatasaray winger Baris Alper Yilmaz sealed the deal for Turkey. However, Croatia does not need any introduction in the comeback games. They quietly continue to excel on the international stage, regularly reaching the latter stages of tournament football. Real Madrid superstar Luka Modric continues to be a part of the squad even at the age of 38. It will be interesting to see what role he plays for the national side in today’s clash. Subsequently, it will also give an opportunity for rising talents in Croatian football to mark their presence for the national side. But one big concern for Croatia will be the serious injury suffered by Ivan Perisic. The 34-year-old Tottenham player will take some time before he is on course for the national side.
Wales’ probable starting lineup: Ward, Mepham, Rodon, Davies, Roberts, James, Ampadu, N. Williams, Wilson, James, Moore
Croatia‘s probable starting lineup: Livakovic, Stanisic, Sutalo, Gvardiol, Sosa, Modric, Brozovic, Kovacic, Vlasic, Petkovic, Brekalo
