The 213th edition of Madrid derby is set to take place at Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday evening, with Real Madrid hosting bitter rivals Atletico Madrid in the Spanish top flight. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of victories, as the hosts came from behind to beat Liverpool 5-2 in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, while Atletico secured a narrow 1-0 league-win over Athletic Bilbao, last weekend. As of now, Los Blancos are occupying second spot in the Spanish top flight standings, having collected 51 points from 22 games, eight adrift of leaders Barcelona. The visitors, meanwhile, are sitting two places behind their next opponents, separated by ten points.

On Tuesday, Real Madrid went down by two goals inside the opening 15 minutes courtesy of efforts from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah. However, the reigning European champions know a thing or two about fighting back, and Vinicius Junior scored twice in the next 20 minutes to level the score. After the break, Eder Militao headed home from Luka Modric’s free-kick to give the lead to Real, before Karim Benzema’s brace sealed their win in the first leg of the last-16 tie at Anfield. It was Los Blancos’ fifth consecutive win across all competitions. Prior to that, Real defeated Osasuna in the league last Saturday, thanks to late goals from Federico Valverde and Marco Asensio. Although retaining the La Liga trophy looks a bit difficult now, Ancelotti’s side are very much alive in the Champions League and Copa del Rey.

Atletico Madrid, on the other hand, are not playing in European football, having been knocked out of the Champions League in the group stage, and were also eliminated from the Copa del Rey by Real Madrid in the quarter-final. Therefore, Diego Simeone’s side only have La Liga to worry about for the rest of the season, and their full focus will be on claiming at least a top-four finish. Last time out, the Red and Whites secured a narrow win over Athletic Club, courtesy of Antoine Griezmann’s 73rd-minute effort. It was their 12th league-win of the season. Atletico will be traveling to Bernabeu looking to make it three consecutive wins in the Spanish top flight and extend their lead over fifth-placed Real Betis to four points.
