RB Leipzig will host Shakhtar Donetsk in their first group match of the 2022-23 Champions League campaign at Red Bull Arena Leipzig on Tuesday. The hosts earned a direct qualification to the group stage of Europe’s elite club football competition by securing a 4th-place finish in the Bundesliga last term. Shakhtar Donetsk, on the other hand, won the 2021-22 Ukrainian Premier League to earn a spot among Europe’s elite. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a disappointing 4-0 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in a German top flight match last Saturday, while Shakhtar got the better of Rukh Vynnyky 1-0 in their domestic league fixture a day earlier.

Leipzig haven’t made a great start to their 2022-23 Bundesliga campaign, recording just one win from their opening five games thus far. Their lone victory came at home to Wolfsburg (2-0) courtesy of a brace from Christopher Nkunku, at the end of August. Shakhtar, on the other hand, started their league season with a goalless draw against Metalist 1925, before registering back-to-back 1-0 wins against Kryvbas KR and Rukh Vynnyky. Yukhym Konoplya’s lone sirke in the 78th minute was enough to separate the two sides at Ukraina stadium last Friday.
