AC Milan will kick off their 2022-23 UEFA Champions League campaign with a trip to Austria to take on Red Bull Salzburg on Tuesday night. Milan had booked a place in the group-stage of Europe’s elite club football competition courtesy of winning last season’s Serie A title, while Salzburg won the 2021-22 Austrian Bundesliga title. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a 2-0 victory over WSG Tirol in their domestic league fixture last Saturday. Milan, meanwhile, defeated arch-rivals Inter Milan 3-2 in an Italian top flight match, on the same day.

Milan didn’t make a great start to their Serie A title-defence, recording only three wins from their opening five games. However, in their recent outing against Inter, in the Milan derby, Stefano Pioli’s side produced a thrilling performance to come through a five-goal thriller. Rafael Leao netted a brace, while Olivier Giroud scored once to secure all three points at San siro. The result helped Rossoneri to extend their unbeaten run to 21 league games. Meanwhile, Milan suffered a Champions League group-stage exit last term and would be aiming to deliver a much better performance this time around.
RB Salzburg, on the other hand, reached the last-16 stage of the Champions League last term. The Red Bulls managed to earn a 1-1 draw against Bayern Munich in the first leg of the knockout round tie before being blown away at the Allianz Arena. Matthias Jaissle’s side has made an impressive start to their Austrian Bundesliga title-defence, winning six of their opening seven games to be sitting at the summit of the standings. In their previous match against WSG Tirol, goals from Noah Okafor and Youba Diarra helped the Red Bulls make it five wins in a row.
Salzburg boss Jaissle is unlikely to make too many alterations to the squad that started at the weekend. Fernando and Okafor are expected to lead the line with Kameri operating behind them. As for Milan, Ante Rebic is pushing for a spot in the starting eleven. Leao and Messias could occupy the flanks with De Ketelaere providing the creative spark up front.
RB Salzburg probable starting lineup: Kohn, Dedic, Solet, Wober, Ulmer, Capaldo, Seiwald, Kjaergaard, Kameri, Fernando, Okafor
AC Milan probable starting lineup: Maignan, Calabria, Kalulu, Tomori, Hernandez, Tonali, Bennacer, Messias, De Ketelaere, Leao, Giroud
The Champions League match between RB Salzburg and AC Milan will take place at Red Bull Arena Salzburg on Wednesday at 12:30 am IST.
