The final nail was in the coffin as Ahmadou Bamba Dieng scored Senegal’s third goal and broke Qatari hearts with destiny now out of their hands.
Senegal clinched their first win of the 2022 World Cup with a 3-1 victory over Qatar. The hosts, Qatar, locked horns with Senegal in Matchday 2 from Group A at the Al Thumama Stadium, Doha. After a shocking performance against Ecuador in the opener, Qatar went with a 3-5-2 formation with Barsham in between the sticks. Mohammad, Khoukhi and Fadlalla played as their back three. Miguel, Haidos, Boudiaf, Madibo and Elamin played in the middle and Ali, and Afif played as their primary front two. Qatar came into the contest with just one loss in their last five but came in the wrong place and at the wrong time.

After a 0-2 loss against the Dutch, Senegal came into the must-win contest against Qatar, and Aliou Cisse’s men went with a traditional 4-4-2 with the Chelsea man Mendy as their Number one. Dia and Diedhiou played as their forwards, while Sarr, Gueye, Mendy and Diatta played at the heart of the pitch. Their defensive line was sold with Diallo and Koulibaly as their center-backs and Jakobs and Salaby on either side of the CBs. Senegal held a solid line against the Netherlands but were unfortunate to concede late in the 84’, only to go on to lose 0-2 to Louis Van Gaal’s men.
Senegal began the game with a bang, completely dominating possession in the first few minutes and patiently building the game. Qatar were content to sit back and attack the counter, but it almost backfired minutes later when Salaby made a good run down the right before pulling it back to Dia. Senegal then moves quickly as Mohammad cuts in and pushes it toward the goal, only to be pushed away by Barsham. Khoukhi had a shocking slip, and Diatta swung a cross towards the goal, which bounced up to Dia, who put it past Barsham.
Senegal took advantage of a corner and a great ball from Jakobs. Senegal takes a 2-0 lead at the Al Thumama after Diedhiou makes a run to the near post on the edge of the six-yard box and stops before flicking his header over Barsham and into the far corner. Qatar then came up with a lot of promise as Madibo whipped one into the box for Mohammad to knee it, but Mendy’s top reflexes came to Senegal’s rescue to tip it wide. Qatar scored their first goal in the FIFA World Cup courtesy of Mohammad Muntari to give the Qatari fans some hope. The final nail was in the coffin as Ahmadou Bamba Dieng scored Senegal’s third goal and broke Qatari hearts with destiny now out of their hands.
