World Cup hosts Qatar will take on Senegal in their second Group A fixture at Al Thumama Stadium on Friday evening. Both sides had suffered similar defeats in their opening fixtures. Qatar were defeated 2-0 by Ecuador on Sunday, while Senegal lost to Netherlands with an identical scoreline, a day later. Therefore, it’s going to be a crucial match for both nations in order to keep their hopes of going through to the knockout stages alive. The host nation were outclassed by La Tri at the Lusail stadium. Senegal, meanwhile, were unlucky not to get atleast a point from their game against the Dutch as the Lions of Teranga looked the better side for a major part of the game.

Qatar let themselves down massively in their opening match against the South American outfit. The Maroons appeared low on confidence and it took a while for them to get going, but by that time, La Tri took a comfortable 2-0 lead. Enner Valencia scored the first goal of the tournament from the penalty spot, inside the opening 16 minutes. And then, on the half-hour mark, the Fenerbahce forward scored his second of the night with a brilliant header and made the score 2-0. Ecuador’s defence did a fine job to hold on to the two goal lead and restricted Qatar to zero shots on target. The results meant that Qatar became the first host nation to lose the opening fixture. Head coach Feliz Sanchez has a big task at his disposal, to uplift the morale of the team and try and turn their fortunes against the African champions.

Senegal, on the other hand, would be disappointed to end up on the losing side despite producing some fine attacking football against the three-time finalists. Aliou Cisse’s side, with their pace and physical prowess caused all sorts of problems to the Dutch defence but lacked quality in the final third. The African champions were made to pay for their missed chances as Cody Gakpo headed home from a brilliant Frenkie de Jong cross to break the deadlock, six minutes from time. Nine minutes into the injury time, substitute Davy Klaasen made the score 2-0 to seal Oranje’s win.

Probable Lineups

Qatar midfielder Hassan Al Haydos, who has 171 international caps to his name, is expected to join Boudiaf and Hatem in the engine room. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb had a poor game against Ecuador and it won’t be surprising to see if the 32-year-old is replaced with either one of the two backup keepers. As for Senegal, the big news is that Nottingham Forest midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate, who was stretchered off against Holland will miss Friday’s fixture. The 32-year-old is likely to be replaced with Ndiaye. Meanwhile the two wingers Ismaila Sarr and Krepin Diatta had an impressive outing against Louis van Gaal’s side and should retain their place in the playing eleven.

Qatar probable starting lineup: Barsham, Pedro, Miguel, Khoukhi, Salman, A Hassan, Ahmed, Al Haydos, Boudiaf, Hatem, Ali Afif

Senegal probable starting lineup: Dieng, Sabaly, Koulibaly, Cisse, Diallo, I Gueye, N Mendy, Ndiaye, I Sarr, Dia, Diatta
