China will be looking to secure a place in the knockout stage of the AFC Asian Cup 2023 when they take on hosts Qatar in their final Group A fixture at Khalifa International Stadium on Monday. Dragon’s Team have taken two points from as many league games, and are sitting at the second spot in the group, four points adrift of the hosts who have already sealed their place in the last-16 stage. The reigning champions are heading into the match on the back of a narrow 1-0 success over Tajikistan on Wednesday, while the Chinese played out a goalless draw with Lebanon on matchday two.

Qatar began their title-defence with a dominant 3-0 win over Lebanon in the tournament opener, before edging past Tajikistan 1-0 last time out. The Maroons secured all three points against the Tajiks in the midweek thanks to Akram Afif’s lone goal inside the opening 17 minutes of the game. Tintin Marquez’s side dominated the proceedings against the Crowns, having 60% ball possession, attempting six shots on target compared to just three by the opponents. Moreover, the reigning champions have now won five of their last six games in all competitions, scoring 19 goals and keeping four clean sheets in the process.
China, on the other hand, have been solid at the back, keeping a second successive clean sheet against Lebanon on Wednesday. But Aleksandar Jankovic side are still without a victory in this edition of the tournament. Dragon’s Team have struggled to create clear cut chances up front and lack of quality in the attacking department has been a recurring theme with this team for a few months now, scoring only once in their last five competitive fixtures. Nevertheless, a victory on Monday will seal China’s place in the last-16 stage of the Asian Cup. Even a draw could earn them a place in the knockout round if Tajikistan and Lebanon play to one themselves, while a defeat might knock them out depending on other results.
