The hosts began their English second tier campaign with a 1-1 draw away to Bristol city last weekend, while the Black Cats suffered a 2-1 defeat against the newly promoted Ipswich Town in their curtain raiser.
Two sides looking to record their first Championship victory of the campaign will square off on Saturday as Preston North End host Sunderland at Deepdale in the second of the league this term. The hosts began their English second tier campaign with a 1-1 draw away to Bristol city last weekend, while the Black Cats suffered a 2-1 defeat against the newly promoted Ipswich Town in their curtain raiser. Meanwhile, both sides are heading into the match on the back of defeats in their EFL cup first round fixtures in the mid-week against fourth tier outfits. The Invincibles lost out to Salford City, while the visitors were beaten by Crewe Alexandra. The previous encounter between these two clubs was back in May in Preston, where Sunderland prevailed 3-0 thanks to second-half efforts from Amad Diallo, Alex Pritchard and Jack Clarke.

Preston came from behind to earn a point against Bristol City in their curtain raiser last weekend, thanks to Will Keane’s equaliser four minutes from time. The Invincibles looked like the better side at Ashton Gate, having close to 55% ball possession and attempting 11 shots compared to five efforts by the hosts, but failed to record the victory. Three days later, Ryan Lowe’s much changed side welcomed Salford City for the EFL Cup first round tie, and fought back from 2-0 down to level the score through Ben Woodburn and Duane Holmes, but eventually lost 4-2 in the tiebreaker. Preston finished 12th in the second tier last term and if they are do any better this time around, then Lowe’s side definitely needs to improve on their home-record, having won just seven of their 23 league games in front of their own supporters last term.
Sunderland, on the other hand, lost out to the Tractor Boys in their league-opener last Sunday despite having more than 65% ball possession and attempting 20 shots at the Stadium on Light. The Black Cats went down 2-0 courtesy of goals from Nathan Broadhead and George Hirst, before pulling one back through Dan Neil’s 86th-minute effort. Only 48 hours later, the Rocker Men were in action at their North East home to suffer another loss, this time against fourth tier side Crewe Alexandra in the EFL Cup tie. Coal Cats came from behind to make the score 1-1 thanks to Criag Rigg’s 64th-minute effort but lost out 5-3 in the tiebreaker.
