Hull City secured 15th place finish in the Championship last term, collecting 58 points from 46 games, and they will be hoping to challenge for a top half finish this time around. The Tigers had a long pre-season, recording three wins and four draws from seven friendlies this summer, and unsurprisingly made a positive start to their league campaign against Norwich, going ahead inside the opening 17 minutes as Liam Delap capitalised on a defensive error at Carrow Road. However, the Canaries leveled the score through Jon Rowe’s effort on the stroke of half-time before Adam Isah tapped home a winner for the hosts in the 96th-minute. Following that opening day disappointment, Liam Rossenior’s side play host to Doncaster in the EFL Cup first round tie on Tuesday, and again went ahead early as Oscar Estupinan netted in the third minute, but they would eventually get eliminated from the tournament courtesy of George Miller’s brace.
Sheffield Wednesday are also seeking their first points of the season after a tough opening day game of their own. The Owls returned to the Championship after a gap of two seasons courtesy of winning the League One promotion playoff tie last term. After a difficult pre-season that saw them recording one win, two draws and three defeats from six friendlies this summer, the South Yorkshire club welcomed newly-relegated Southampton for their second tier opener on Saturday. The Owls looked in good position to take a share of the spoils as Lee Gregory canceled out Adam Armstrong’s opener, but the visitors restored the lead through Che Adams’ 87th-minute effort and broke the hearts of the home fans. Three days later, Munoz’s side welcomed fourth tier side Stockport for the EFL Cup first round tie and came from behind to level the score thanks to Tyreeq Bakinson’s 97th-minute equaliser, before prevailing 4-1 in the tie breaker.
