In a league as difficult as the Premier League, it becomes extremely challenging for a team to maintain their consistency at the top level. However, some clubs manage to do it more efficiently than others. It is these teams that are backed by the supporters and pundits to maintain their standards consistently at a high level. However, since the difficulty level of the English top flight is extremely high, clubs find it difficult to stay at the top of their game for longer periods. With the game also evolving and plenty of cash being pumped into the division, the Premier League is undoubtedly the most difficult league in European football.

There are no easy matches in the division. Even against a bottom-placed side, a team has to play at the top of their game to get the three points. The fast-paced physical league is also not one for everyone, hence some players struggle to deal with the demands of the game more than others. Hence, there are many factors as to why a team would underperform massively despite being able to stay at the top end of the table in past seasons. Read below to find out more about the clubs that have failed to live up to the expectations in 2022-23 season.

Chelsea

It goes without saying that Chelsea have been the most disappointing team of the 2022-23 Premier League campaign. They have fallen so far down the table that a top half finish is already looking like a difficult proposition. The multiple managerial changes did not help their cause either. They started with Thomas Tuchel before being replaced by Graham Potter and then Frank Lampard arrived at the end of the season in a caretake role. Despite the changes, they have only gone from bad to worse and have looked like a shadow of their previous self. Despite spending a staggering amount of money in the summer and winter transfer windows, Chelsea have performed well below par. They are not able to score goals and are also unable to stop leaking goals in their own penalty box. It has been a season to forget for their supporters.

Tottenham Hotspur

Another London outfit in the list is Tottenham Hotspur. They are known for their inconsistencies, however, the way they have performed this season has been alarming at times. After reaching the top four in dramatic fashion last campaign, Spurs were expected to kick on under Antonio Conte. However, things have taken a turn for the worse. Conte is no longer at the club, as they continue to search for a full-time manager, who will possibly take over the team in the summer. They have had some embarrassing results and have been unable to maintain proper consistency. With top four hopes becoming a distant dream, their supporters will hope for the campaign to end soon.

Liverpool

It is incredible to see Liverpool fall this far down. They had one of the best seasons any team could have last time around. The Reds played every single match possible by reaching the final of all the cup competitions and also fought for the Premier League title till the very end. They were expected to build on that campaign this time around, however, this season has been a massive disappointment. Jurgen Klopp’s side are out of all cup competitions and are also way behind in the top four race. They will not only need to win all their remaining games but would also require other teams to drop plenty of points in order to finish in Champions League places.
