Manchester City are inching ever closer to getting their hands on the Premier League trophy following the latest set of results. Second-placed Arsenal’s unexpected 3-0 loss to Brighton last weekend has more or less ended the Gunners’ title push. As a result, Man City are now in a position to lift the coveted league title this weekend. Very few could say that Pep Guardiola’s side do not deserve to clinch the league trophy.

For most part of the season, Arsenal were leading the Premier League table. Mikel Arteta’s side surprised many people by staying on top of the standings for such a long period. Some even felt that the Gunners would go all the way, however, a run of poor results at the business end of the season has cost the London outfit dearly. City were patiently waiting in the second place before making the most of Arsenal’s slip. With the Premier League trophy now within touching distance, let us look at the possible scenarios that could help Manchester City win the league title this weekend.

Defeat for Arsenal: Man City win EPL title

Arsenal play first this weekend among the two clubs. The Gunners travel to relegation battling Nottingham Forest on Saturday night. A defeat in this fixture for the North London outfit would immediately guarantee the trophy to Manchester City even before they kick the ball. That is because Arsenal currently have 81 points from 36 games, while Manchester City have 85 points from 35 matches. The maximum Arsenal can reach is 87 points this campaign but if they lose their Saturday’s clash then they would not even be able to match Man City’s current 85-point tally.

Draw for Arsenal: Man City will need one point

If Arsenal are only able to play out a draw against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, then Man City would only require one more point to clinch the league title. A draw will take Arsenal to 82 points this weekend. City’s far superior goal difference should still be enough for Guardiola’s side to win the league title eventually. However, to categorically confirm their triumph this weekend, Man City would only require a draw of their own against Chelsea on Sunday.

Win for Arsenal: Man City will also need a win

Even if Arsenal were to beat Nottingham Forest on Saturday, Manchester City can still clinch the title on Sunday. City would then need all three points against Chelsea to take their tally to 88 points, something which the Gunners will not be able to match this season. It will be a difficult proposition for Arsenal to get the three points against a relegation battling side away from home. Even if they manage in their mission to get the maximum points, then City will back themselves to complete the job at home against a struggling Chelsea side on Sunday.
