Porto will play Cardiff City in a pre-season friendly at Estadio Algarve on Saturday. The Portuguese outfit are heading into the match on the back of a 2-0 win over Portimonense in their pre-season opener in the mid-week, while Cardiff suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Braga. The Dragons are looking to get ready for another season where they will be aiming to win the Primeira Liga title, having finished second in the standings last term. The Bluebirds, meanwhile, extended their stay in the Championship for at least one more season courtesy of finishing 21st in the points table, just five points clear of the relegation zone.

Porto came very close to winning the Portuguese top flight title last term, collecting 85 points from 34 games, just two points adrift of champions Benfica. That said, the Dragons did still experience some success in the 2022-23 season, winning the Taca de Portugal in June, defeating Braga 2-0 in the showdown in Lisbon. Sergio Conceicao’s side returned to action on July 18, defeating Portimonense in a warm-up game. The Portuguese giants have three friendlies lined up this month against the likes of Cardiff, Wolves and Estrela Amdora, before beginning their competitive season with a Portuguese Supercup final against Benfica on August 7.
Cardiff, on the other hand, have already taken on Braga at the Estadio Muncipal de Lagos, losing 1-0 against the Taca de Portugal finalists in what was a closely fought affair, with Simon Banza scoring the lone goal of the match. The Bluebirds, have otherwise gone undefeated in their pre-season matches, recording victories against Penybont and The New Saints, while also playing out draws with Cambridge United and Bristol Rovers. After the game against Porto, Cardiff will play one more warm-up fixture against Wycombe before beginning their upcoming English second tier season away to Leeds United on August 5.
