Leeds United will play host to AS Monaco in a pre-season friendly at LNER Community Stadium in York on Saturday. The Whites are heading into the match on the back of a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United in their pre-season opener in the mid-week, while the Ligue 1 outfit got the better of Real Betis last time out. The Whites are preparing for life back in the English second tier after finishing at the 19th spot in the Premier League standings last season. The Monegasques, meanwhile, had a disappointing 2022-23 French top flight campaign, finishing sixth in the standings and thereby failing to qualify for European competition.

Leeds, ended their Premier League campaign on a disappointing note, recording seven defeats and two draws from their final nine top flight games. The poor run of form meant that the Whites finished second from the bottom at the standings, collecting 31 points from 38 games, five points adrift of safety. Meanwhile, Daniel Farke has been appointed as the new manager of the club and the German tactician will be expected to help the Peacocks make a quick return to the top flight of English football. Although, Farke’s side didn’t have a great start to their pre-season, losing 2-0 to the Red Devils courtesy of goals from Noam Emeran and Joe Hugill, they managed to frustrate Erik ten Hag’s side for three quarters of the game. Fixtures against Monaco, Nottingham Forest and Hearts will follow before the Whites begin their new Championship season at home to Cardiff City on August 6.

Monaco, on the other hand, lost their final three Ligue 1 games to finish in the sixth position. The Monegasques collected 65 points from 38 games, just two points adrift of the top five. The disappointing season led to the departure of Philipe Clement and Austrian Adi Hutter has come into take charge as the manger. The 53-year-old’s side kick started the pre-season preparations with a 1-1 home draw with Union SG two weeks ago, before suffering a 3-0 away defeat to another Belgian in Cerele Brugge. However, Le Rocher picked up their first friendly-win against Betis on Wednesday thanks to Kevin Volland’s brace and one goal from Takumi Minamino. After the game against Leeds, the French outfit have three more warm-up games lined up against the likes of Genoa, Arsenal and Bayern Munich, before starting their 2023-24 Ligue 1 campaign against Clermont Foot on August 13.
